Taking an exam in the exam room

In the exam room, the timer counts down by the server clock, your answers are saved automatically and you can flag questions to review later. When time is up, your exam is submitted automatically.

Steps

  1. Watch the timer and the save status at the top of the page: “Saving...”, “Synced to server”, “Offline — saved on this device” (you lost your connection but your answers are kept on your device) or “Sync error (will retry automatically)”.
  2. Each question shows its type, difficulty and points; questions that belong to a part or a reading passage show their group title in a small line above. For multiple-choice questions, click A, B, C… With a keyboard: press Tab to reach the options, the arrow keys to change your choice and Space to select (for multiple-answer questions, Tab through each option and press Space to select or clear it). For essay questions, type in the “Your answer:” box.
  3. Click “Flag” to mark a question you want to review (the button changes to “Flagged”). Flags stay when you reload the page in the same tab.
  4. Move between questions with “Previous question” / “Next question”, or click a question number in the “Question list”. On phones and tablets, tap the question number button at the top of the page to open the “Question list”; close it with the Close button, by tapping outside it, or with the Esc key.
  5. Click “Submit”. The “Confirm exam submission” box shows how many questions you answered and lists the ones left blank (“… questions unanswered: Questions …”) and the flagged ones (“… flagged questions: Questions …”). Choose “Back to the exam” or “Submit now”.

Common errors and how to fix them

  • “Couldn't load the exam” or “This exam has no questions yet, or the attempt has ended.” → the attempt may already have been submitted (for example, because time ran out). Click “Back to home”, then check the “Results” page.
  • “Submission failed. Please try again.” → check your connection, wait until the status shows “Synced to server”, then submit again.
  • “You have no attempts left” → you've used all the attempts your teacher allows. Click “View results” to see the attempts you submitted.
  • “This exam has been archived” → your teacher has archived the exam, so it doesn't accept new attempts.
  • In a test, the correct answers aren't shown while you work. Only practice exams have the “Check answer” button (see the Practice guide).
  • The exam page doesn't let you highlight text in the questions to copy it.
