Run a Golden Bell game online in class

Golden Bell is a familiar knockout quiz game in Vietnamese schools: everyone answers together, anyone who gets it wrong leaves the floor, and the last player standing wins. In Bút Nghiên, you can run Golden Bell right in your class without mini whiteboards or someone keeping count: students answer on their phones, and Bút Nghiên knocks out wrong answers automatically and records every rescue.

Rules

  1. When the game starts, every player is on the floor. Anyone who joins late becomes part of the audience.
  2. After each question, players on the floor who answer wrong or don't answer leave the floor and join the audience.
  3. If everyone on the floor gets the same question wrong, no one is out. The projector shows “Everyone on the floor got it wrong — no one is out!”.
  4. The audience keeps answering but doesn't earn points. Answering correctly gives audience members a chance to be rescued back onto the floor.
  5. When exactly one player is left on the floor, the projector shows “The Golden Bell has rung!” and the next-question button changes to “Celebrate the winner”. If the questions run out while several players are still on the floor, they all win.

How to create a Golden Bell game

  1. Choose “Live games” → “Create game”, then choose an exam or question bank.
  2. Under “Pacing”, choose “Teacher-paced”. Golden Bell can't be used with “Student-paced”.
  3. Under “Format”, choose “Golden Bell”.
  4. Choose the “Players per rescue”, from 1 to 10 players (3 by default).
  5. If you want Bút Nghiên to rescue players automatically when the audience answers well, turn on “Auto-rescue” and choose an “Audience correct rate” from 50% to 100%.
  6. Choose the time per question, then click “Create and open lobby”.
  • Choose “Accuracy” scoring and give each question about 20 to 30 seconds, so students have time to think, just like a real Golden Bell contest.
  • Golden Bell can't be turned on together with Picture puzzle.

Rescue: bringing the audience back to the floor

  1. After revealing the answer to a question (except the last one), click the “Rescue” button with the number of players, for example “Rescue (3)”. Bút Nghiên picks the audience members with the most correct answers, giving priority to those who are connected and answered faster, and brings them back to the floor.
  2. To pick players yourself, click “Bring back to the floor” and select up to 10 players at a time from the “Just left the floor” or “Rest of the audience” groups. This is useful when a player was knocked out unfairly because they lost their connection.
  3. Auto-rescue runs when at least 3 audience members answer and the correct rate reaches the level you set. Each game can auto-rescue at most 2 times, and it doesn't apply to the last question.
  • “No audience members have answered correctly yet, so there’s no one to rescue.” → no audience member has a correct answer yet. Wait a few more questions.

What the projector and phones show

The projector has a “The floor” panel with the number of players still on the floor and the number in the audience, updated after each question.

Each player's phone shows where they are, for example “You’re on the floor”, “You left the floor at question 5” or “You’ve been rescued! Back on the floor”.

At the end, the leaderboard puts the players still on the floor at the top, followed by those who left the floor later. The report records the winner and every rescue.
