Exam room settings: Test mode and Practice mode
Step 3 of the exam builder has all the exam room options. Once the exam is created, the “Settings” button on the exam card opens a quick settings box with fewer options.

Steps
- In step “3. Exam room settings”, choose “Test mode” for a real test, or “Practice mode” for a review exam.
- If you choose Practice, Bút Nghiên automatically shows scores and answers right after submission and turns off the one-device limit. Students get a “Check answer” button for each question. Practice attempts don't go into the class's official scores.
- Fill in the time, audience, shuffling, session protection and result release sections in order (see the table below).
- To make quick changes to an existing exam: go to “Exams”, click “Settings” on the exam card, make your changes, then click “Save exam settings”.
Options and limits
- Time (Test)
- “Time limit (minutes)”, “Opening time (Start)”, “Closing time (Deadline)”. Leave the opening time blank to open the exam right away; leave the closing time blank to keep it from locking at a deadline.
- Time (Practice)
- “Duration per practice attempt (minutes)”, “Practice opens at (optional)”, “Practice closes at (optional)” — the last two can be left blank.
- Audience
- Choose a class under “Assign to class”, or leave “Open exam — every student on Bút Nghiên can see it” (every student with a Bút Nghiên account can see and take the exam). “Max attempts” goes from 1 to 20. Students in the class get a notification automatically when the exam opens.
- Shuffling
- “Shuffle question order” and “Shuffle the order of answers A, B, C, D”: each attempt gets its own order. Questions with a group title are only shuffled within their group, and the order of the groups stays the same. True/False questions never have their options shuffled: the two options always stay in the order you wrote. Both options are on by default.
- Exam session protection
- “Limit to one exam session at a time” (off by default). When it's on, each attempt can only be taken in one tab or on one device. Not available in Practice mode.
- Score release
- “When can students see their score?”: “Right after submission”, “After the exam ends” or “Don't show scores”. If you choose “After the exam ends”, you must fill in the closing time.
- Answer release
- “When can students see answers & explanations?”: “Right after submission”, “After the exam ends” or “Don't show answers”. In Test mode, if you choose “After the exam ends” (for scores or answers), you must fill in a closing time: the exam builder won't let you publish, and the “Settings” box on the exam card won't let you save, until there's a closing time, because otherwise students would never get to see them.
- Taking the exam without an account
- Open “Advanced options (guest access / public link)” and tick “Allow people without an account to take part”. Also tick “Require candidates to enter their full name” so you know who took the exam. Each time a guest starts counts as a new attempt; the attempt limit doesn't apply to guests.
- The “Settings” box on the exam card
- Edit the exam title, time limit (1–1440 minutes), number of attempts (1–20), opening/closing times, question/answer shuffling, showing scores right away, and showing answers and explanations. Use “Exam room status” to open the exam to students, close it now, cancel it, or move it back to draft (only while nobody has taken it); leave it on “Keep as is” and the status doesn't change — an open exam still closes by itself at its closing time. You can't change the mode or turn guest access on/off here (do that on the share page). At the bottom of the dialog there's a “Delete exam” button while nobody has taken the exam, or “Archive exam” once students have taken it (their work and scores are kept); an archived exam has “Restore” and “Delete permanently”.
- A “Draft” exam stays a draft when you click “Save exam settings”. To open it to students, choose “Open to students” under “Exam room status”, then save.
