What does shuffling a multiple-choice exam mean?
Shuffling a multiple-choice exam means changing the order of the questions or answers to create several different paper codes while keeping the content and the correct answers the same. The system has to handle these two actions independently. If you only swap the letters A–D on paper without updating the answer key, the exam will be graded wrong.

Two actions to keep separate
When teachers talk about “shuffling an exam”, they often mean two different things at once. Bút Nghiên splits them into two options in the exam room settings: “Shuffle question order” and “Shuffle the order of answers A, B, C, D” (on by default).
- Shuffling the question order: question 1 might become question 7 for a given student. The question itself doesn't change.
- Shuffling the answer order within each question: A/B/C/D swap places. The correct answer must follow its content, not its old letter.
Example: shuffling answers without breaking the key
Take an original question about transport protocols. The correct answer is originally C.
Original question A. HTTP B. FTP C. TCP D. DNS Correct answer: C. After shuffling A. DNS B. TCP C. FTP D. HTTP The correct answer must move from C to B.
Why hand grading goes wrong
If a teacher prints 4 paper codes but uses one answer key “C, A, D…” for all four, students who get a shuffled paper lose points unfairly. The software has to remember the correct answer by the content of the option, not by the letter A, B, C or D shown on screen.
Bút Nghiên shuffles the order separately for each attempt. The teacher writes only one original, each student sees a different order, and Bút Nghiên grades by the correct option attached to the question, so it never grades by mistake.
When to turn off answer shuffling
Turn off answer shuffling when the order of the options carries meaning: “both A and B”, “A, B and C are all correct”, or an “ascending / descending” scale. Bút Nghiên doesn't shuffle True/False questions: the two options always stay in the order you wrote. “Put the steps in order” questions shouldn't be shuffled either.
| Question type | Shuffle questions | Shuffle answers |
|---|---|---|
| Single answer with independent A–D options | Yes | Yes |
| Multiple answers | Yes | Yes, unless there's a “both A and B” option |
| True / False | Yes | No — Bút Nghiên keeps the order you wrote |
| Essay | Yes | Not applicable |
How to turn it on in Bút Nghiên
- When you create an exam, go to the exam room settings step. For a published exam, click “Settings” on the exam card.
- Turn on “Shuffle question order” if you want each student to see the questions in a different order.
- Turn on “Shuffle the order of answers A, B, C, D” if you want to shuffle the options. This option is on by default.
- Publish the exam or save the settings. You don't need to create four exams by hand.
- Don't use the original answer key to grade shuffled papers by hand; the grading will be wrong. Grade in Bút Nghiên, or when you print several paper codes, use the answer key printed for each code.
- If you change the settings while students are already taking the exam, their current attempts keep the order they were given; only new attempts follow the new settings.
Conclusion
Shuffling an exam properly means keeping the content and the answer key the same and only changing the display order. Bút Nghiên does this for each attempt. Teachers don't need to make four copies of an exam just to stop copying.
