Text syntax for writing exams

When you write in the advanced editor (or prepare a Word file to import), you follow a few simple rules: start with Question 1., put a * before the correct answer, and write EXPLANATION: before the explanation. Bút Nghiên detects the question type, points and difficulty automatically.

Steps

  1. Each question starts with Question 1. (Bút Nghiên also accepts Q1., or 1. / 1) when the whole exam is numbered that way). When the exam uses “Question 1.”, lines such as “1.”, “2.” inside a question (for example “Consider the following statements: 1. … 2. …”) stay part of that question and are not split off as new questions.
  2. Write the points in parentheses: (2 points) or (2 pts). Without points, the question is worth 1 point.
  3. To set the question type explicitly, add [MULTIPLE], [TRUE_FALSE], [SHORT_ANSWER] (fill in the blank) or [ESSAY]. For difficulty, write [EASY], [MEDIUM], [HARD], or a cognitive level: [NB] (Remember), [TH] (Understand), [VD] (Apply), [VDC] (Advanced application).
  4. Write each option on its own line: A. B. C. D. (up to H). Mark the correct answer with a * before the option, or add a line ANSWER: A, B.
  5. Write the explanation after EXPLANATION: (the Vietnamese keywords for explanation also work).
  6. Group questions into sections or chapters with a line [!b:$Group name$], or with a heading line that starts with the Vietnamese keyword PHẦN (part), CHƯƠNG (chapter) or BÀI HỌC (lesson) followed by a number (regular or Roman numerals), for example “PHẦN I. Multiple choice” or “CHƯƠNG 2: Derivatives”. A line such as “Bài 1.” is still a question, not a group. A group runs until the next group title; to end a group so that the questions after it aren't in any group, write a [!b:$$] line (with an empty title) right before those questions (imported Word or PDF files understand this line too). In the preview, the group shows a GROUP label. The group title appears above the questions when students take the exam, and in the printed exam and the Word file; when questions are shuffled, questions in the same group always stay together, and the questions after a [!b:$$] line are only shuffled among themselves. When students take the exam, the questions after a [!b:$$] line follow straight after the group, without a title of their own. In the printed exam and the Word file, a thin line separates them from the group above; the exam builder, the preview and the attempt review page show the line “End of group — the questions below are not in any group” in the same place.
  7. Write math formulas in LaTeX between $ signs: $x^2 + 1$ stays inside the line of text, and $$\frac{a}{b}$$ is shown on its own line. Examples: x^2 (power), x_1 (subscript), \frac{a}{b} (fraction), \sqrt{x} (square root), \le, \ge, \ne. Put the opening $ right before the formula and the closing $ right after it, and don't let either touch letters or digits outside; that way amounts like “5$”, “$5 and $10” or the Excel cell $A$1 stay ordinary text. To be sure a $ sign is shown, type \$. Write words (for example Vietnamese text) outside the pair of $ signs (or inside \text{…}). Formulas appear as math when students take the exam, in results, in the question bank, the preview, live games and the printed exam; the Word file keeps them as typed. A formula with a syntax error is shown as typed.

Example

[!b:$CHAPTER 1: MIXED REVIEW$]

Question 1. (1.0 points) How does the Waterfall model carry out its phases?
A. Fully in parallel
* B. In order, from start to finish
C. At random
D. Based on testing only
EXPLANATION: The waterfall model is a sequential model.

Question 2. (2.0 points) [MULTIPLE] Which functions are increasing on R?
* A. y = 2x + 1
* B. y = x^3 + x
C. y = -3x + 5
D. y = 1/x

Question 3. [TRUE_FALSE] A cube has exactly 6 equal square faces.
* A. True
B. False
  • A question with no options is treated as an essay question (unless you add [SHORT_ANSWER]). A question with only two options, True and False, is treated as a True/False question. A question with several * marks is treated as a multiple-answer question.
  • The “Multiple-choice question” button inserts a sample written with the Vietnamese keywords and may add a Vietnamese multiple-choice tag; a question that already has A/B/C options doesn't need that tag.
  • Word files are recognized more accurately when they follow the rules above.
