Create an exam in 4 steps: details, questions, exam room, publish

The “Write step by step” exam builder walks you through 4 steps. The exam you're working on is saved automatically in this device's browser, so you can recover it even if you close the page by accident. To save the exam to Bút Nghiên so you can keep working on it later or on another device, click “Save draft” (students can't see drafts).

Steps

  1. Step “1. General information”: enter the “Test title” (required, for example Grade 12 Math 45-minute test). The “Subject” is preselected from the subjects of the classes you teach; if you have no classes yet, choose one under “-- Choose a subject --” (you can't click “Continue” until a subject is chosen). Pick a class under “Assign to class”, or leave “Open exam — every student on Bút Nghiên can see it”: every student with a Bút Nghiên account can then see and take the exam. Set the “Time limit (minutes)” (45 by default, from 1 to 1440), “Max attempts” (1 by default, up to 10 in this step) and the “Description or instructions”. Click “Next: Write questions”.
  2. Step “2. Write questions”: add questions with the “Single answer”, “Multiple answers”, “True / False” or “Essay” buttons, or click “Add from question bank” to pick individual questions from your bank. If the exam has groups, each group has a “Group” row where you can rename it (press Enter or click outside to save, Esc to cancel). New questions are added to the last group. Moving a question across a group boundary with the arrows moves it into the neighboring group; a group is never split in two; if the neighboring question isn't in any group, the question is moved out of its group. A question that isn't in any group and comes right after a group has a thin “End of group — the questions below are not in any group” line above it. The red box in this step only lists question errors; settings errors are reported in step 4.
  3. For each question: choose the difficulty “Easy”, “Medium” or “Hard” (the cognitive level, if the question has one, appears as a read-only label), set the points (0.25–10), enter the “Question content” and the options, then click a letter to choose the correct answer. You can add a detailed explanation or leave it blank. Multiple-choice questions need at least 2 options. Essay questions are graded by hand by the teacher after students submit. Formulas written between two $ signs (see the Text syntax guide) appear in the “Preview” line below the input box, so you can see how they will look.
  4. Click “Next: Exam room settings” (the exam needs at least 1 question). If there are errors, the top of the page shows “Found … errors to fix in the exam:” and lists up to 5 of them.
  5. Step “3. Exam room settings”: choose the mode, times, class, shuffling, score release… (see the Exam room settings guide).
  6. Step “4. Review & Publish”: check the “Test” or “Practice” mode, number of questions, time limit, number of attempts and total points. The summary table below lists “Who can take it”, “Shuffle questions / answers”, “Guest access”, “Opens / closes”, “Scores / answers released” and “Anti-cheating”, and each row has an “Edit” button that takes you back to the right step. If the exam still has errors, they're listed here and the publish button is locked, for example when you choose to release results “After the exam ends” without filling in a closing time. Click “Publish exam now”. The exam opens right away, or shows “Not open yet” if its opening time is still in the future. Bút Nghiên then takes you to the exam's share page and deletes the draft saved on your device.

Common errors and how to fix them

  • “The exam title can't be empty.” or “The exam title must be at least 2 characters.” → enter a title in step 1.
  • “Please choose a subject for the exam.” → choose a subject in step 1.
  • “The time limit must be between 1 and 1440 minutes.” → fix the time limit.
  • “The closing time must be after the opening time.” → fix the opening or closing time in step 3.
  • “The exam must have at least one question.” or “The exam has … errors to fix before publishing.” → fix the listed questions, then click again.
  • “Error creating exam” or another error message when publishing → check your connection, then click “Publish exam now” again.
  • Some warnings don't block publishing, for example options with the same content or questions without an explanation.
  • At the top of the builder there are “Switch to advanced editor” (write as text), “Save draft” and “Close” buttons. “Save draft” saves the exam to Bút Nghiên as a draft; it needs a title of at least 2 characters, a chosen subject and at least one question. Clicking it again replaces the previous draft with the new version, even after you reload the page on the same device. When you reopen the builder on the same device, you may see “Draft restored” (the exam room settings are kept too). Click “Discard draft, start a new exam” next to it to delete the draft on this device and start over; a version you saved with “Save draft” stays in “Exams”.
